How to take care of your Baccus shirt

How to Care for Your BACCUS Shirt

A BACCUS shirt is made with quality fabrics and produced in Portugal. To make it last longer and maintain its fit and color, it requires some basic care in washing, drying, and ironing. Here, we've gathered the correct instructions for each fabric type we use: cotton, linen, linen-cotton blend, oxford, and easy care/no iron shirts.

1. Washing

First and foremost, always check the shirt's label. That's where you'll find the exact information on washing temperature and program for that specific fabric.

General rules

  • Turn the shirt inside out before washing. This protects the buttons and prevents the fabric surface from losing color due to friction.
  • Separate by color. White or light-colored shirts should not be washed with dark items.
  • Button up the shirt, including the collar button, to help it maintain its shape in the machine.
  • Use a mesh laundry bag if the shirt has embroidery, decorative cuff links, or is made of pure linen.
  • Avoid washing the shirt with items that have zippers, hooks, or rough fabrics, such as jeans. Friction damages the fibers.

By fabric type

  • 100% Cotton: Machine wash at 30°C, delicate cycle. Withstands regular use without losing quality.
  • 100% Linen: Wash at 30°C, gentle cycle, and preferably by hand for premium linen shirts. Linen is a natural fiber more sensitive to mechanical friction.
  • Linen-Cotton Blend (55% Linen / 45% Cotton): Wash at 30°C, delicate cycle. This blend is more wrinkle-resistant than pure linen but requires the care of a natural fabric.
  • Oxford: A heavier fabric, it can withstand washing at 30-40°C without issue, normal cycle.
  • Easy Care / No Iron: Wash at 30°C. These shirts have an anti-wrinkle treatment, so avoid high temperatures, which degrade this finish over time.

Always use mild detergent and avoid bleach, even on white shirts. Bleach yellows cotton in the long run instead of keeping it white.

2. Drying

  • Never tumble dry. Direct heat shrinks the fabric and destroys the finish of easy-care shirts.
  • Hang the shirt on a hanger immediately after washing, while still damp. This helps stretch the fabric naturally and reduces creases.
  • Button the collar and the first button to help the shirt dry in the correct shape.
  • Dry in the shade. Direct sunlight fades colors, especially on brightly colored or patterned shirts.
  • For pure linen, prefer to dry flat on a towel to avoid deforming the fit at the shoulders.

3. Ironing

The iron temperature depends on the fabric. Always consult the label before ironing.

  • Cotton and Oxford: Hot iron, with steam. Iron the shirt while it's still slightly damp for easier results.
  • Linen: Hot iron, but iron the shirt inside out to avoid marking the fabric, which can become shinier with direct heat.
  • Linen-Cotton: Medium temperature, moderate steam.
  • Easy Care / No Iron: Does not require ironing in most cases. If you still want to, use low temperature only for touch-ups.

Order for ironing a shirt

  1. Collar, from outside in.
  2. Cuffs.
  3. Sleeves.
  4. Back.
  5. Chest and front, paying attention to the button area.

4. Storing

  • Store shirts on hangers, not folded in drawers, to avoid permanent creases.
  • Keep your wardrobe dry and airy. Humidity promotes mold and moths, especially in natural fabrics like cotton and linen.
  • Leave space between shirts on the hanger. This prevents wrinkling and helps air out the fabric.
  • If storing a formal shirt for long periods (e.g., between weddings), use a breathable fabric bag, never a sealed plastic one.

Formal and Made-to-Measure Shirts

If you have a BACCUS formal shirt or a made-to-measure piece, take extra care in washing and drying. These shirts usually have finer fabrics and finishes that require hand washing or a delicate cycle, and the tailored fit will be better preserved if you avoid tumble drying and excessive heat when ironing.
